Before your apprenticeship begins, you will have an onboarding call with the Relationships Lead and the employer which is an opportunity to outline core expectations, answer any questions, and to get to know the employer better before joining them. You employer is responsible for ensuring:
- Access to a laptop that you can use from the start of their training. If this requires any sort of technical or security onboarding, then we recommend bringing the start of the apprentice’s employment forward by a day or two, to allow time to complete the onboarding before the start of training
- A single point of contact from the start of your employment to act as support while you are still learning
- Access to existing code repositories to review before joining full-time. Remember you shouldn’t be assigned any tasks until their initial training is completed;
- Time scheduled to meet up either in-person or online with other team members and key personnel from other departments;
- A checklist of essential languages, libraries, platforms and concepts that a member of your engineering team is expected to know
- Assigned a line manager to act as their primary point of contact for non-technical questions and to lead performance reviews
- Assigned peer mentor to go through the task checklist and to respond to any questions during onboarding;
- A checklist of tasks for the apprentice to work through independently and with avenues of support if needed
- Time blocked out for line management reviews and support; working on your portfolio; attending off the job learning sessions regularlyYou are give time blocked out to attend the off the job learning sessions
- Opportunities for the apprentice and other team members to work on issues together, particularly those that are slightly beyond the apprentice’s current level of competence;
- Opportunities for the apprentice to read others’ code and work collaboratively with the broader team e.g. through reviewing pull requests.
