To prepare effectively for your EPA, it helps to understand the difference between KSBs and assessment criteria and how each one is used.

1. KSBs: What you must learn (broad)

KSBs set out the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the occupation.

They are intentionally broad so they apply to any workplace and allow flexibility in training.

Throughout your programme, you should collect evidence that shows how you have achieved each KSB.

You must submit a KSB mapping document as part of your EPA evidence.

2. Assessment Criteria: How you must demonstrate it (specific)

During the EPA, assessors score your performance using assessment criteria.

These criteria make the requirements more specific and measurable, including what distinguishes a pass from a distinction.

Your preparation should focus on showing how well you met the standard through clear examples from your work.

Assessment criteria are not submitted separately — instead, you should maintain a personal crib sheet that helps you prepare for your Professional Discussion or Q&A.
