Apprentice journey

The apprentice journey looks different depending on who the apprentice is and what they are studying. There are broadly three routes, which make the pages below more or less relevant.

📆 Schedule

We generally run three terms per year, starting in September, January and May. Although there are exceptions, this is generally when apprenticeships start.

The Software Foundation programme

For our Level 4 apprenticeship, candidates usually start on our Software Foundation programme before interviewing with employers.

Apprentice salaries

Guidance on apprentice salaries for new hires without previous experience.

Apprenticeship length

Our apprenticeships formally last for 24 months, but apprentices can actually complete in as little as 15 months, if desired, regardless of the length agreed at the start of the apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship agreement

The Education and Skills Funding Agency provides a template for the apprenticeship agreement, which both the apprentice and employer should sign.

The training plan

Before the apprenticeship begins, the Department for Education asks us all to agree and sign a training plan.
